Medicinal Chinese herbs have been used for centuries to cure diseases and alleviate discomfort due to many different disorders. The first herbal classic written in china was published in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) called the Agriculture Emperors Materia Medica.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a unique perspective on the nature of health and illness that varies from that of the western perspective. It holds the human body in great reverence; respecting and promoting its endless capacity for rejuvenation and recovery. Through differentiation of signs and symptoms, a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture can analyze the root cause of the condition. Chinese herbal medicine uses a variety of herbs, in different combinations, to restore balance to the body. By harmonizing the body, mind, and spirit, they are able to combat or prevent illness to improve the quality and duration of life.

At Vitalia, Chinese herbs are prescribed both as a complement to acupuncture treatments and as a primary form of therapy. Chinese herbs can help change unhealthful balances and patterns, resulting in decreased allergy symptoms, increased energy, improved digestion, improved sleep and/or regulated menstrual cycle. The herbs are particularly effective with chronic problems as well as the more acute versions of the common cold and flu, which do not respond as readily to Western medicines. The first appointment in the Chinese herbal medicine department lasts about 1 hour, and follow-up appointments last 1/2 hour. During the appointment, you will be asked many detailed questions about your symptoms and lifestyle patterns. Inspection of the tongue and palpation of the pulses at the wrist will also be included in the diagnostic work-up. Depending on your preference, herbs will be prescribed in tincture, pill, whole herb, or granular form.
