Pregnancy

Once a woman has conceived, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be used to further maintain a healthy pregnancy. In the first trimester acupuncture may be used to help quell morning sickness, fatigue, migranes, and bleeding. During the second trimester acupuncture is often used to treat or prevent heartburn, hemerroids, and stress. Third-trimester treatments can bring much needed relief from joint pain, sciatica, and backache. For those women who are overdue, acupuncture can help to stimulate uterine contractions and begin labor.

PMS and Menstrual Regulations

Acupuncture and herbs can regulate menses and balance emotions. Whether a woman is experiencing painful periods, delayed periods, no periods, or abnormal bleeding, the right combination of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments can help to rebalance the body and relieve these symptoms. Those who suffer from PMS will find that TCM can assist in reducing bloating, smoothing emotions, diminishing cravings, easing digestion, and moderating pre-menstrual headaches.

Menopause

Menopause symptoms can range from mild hot spells at night to constant dripping sweats throughout the day. Some women spot for a few months, others bleed heavily for years. The emotional component of menopause may also be very difficult for some women. Many of these symptoms are caused by hormonal imbalances and changes. In the past various medical professionals have encouraged women to seek hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It is now known from the Women’s Health Initiative that many of these therapies (such as Premarin) may be detrimental to women’s health. TCM can treat menopause naturally and effectively. Generally, acupuncture is used in conjunction with Chinese herbs to help ease the symptoms of menopause and help the body return to a healthy, balanced state.

Infertility

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used to treat infertility for thousands of years. By using a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs it is possible to stimulate ovulation, help to regulate hormone production and communication, and increase blood flow to the uterus (creating a thicker uterine lining and increasing the likelihood of implantation of the embryo in the Uterus). It has also been reported that Chinese herbal medicine in conjunction with acupuncture may enhance the quality of the eggs that the ovaries produce. While Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are effective in helping couples conceive naturally, they are also highly successful in supplementing ART (assisted reproductive therapy) including IVF and IUI. Growing numbers of research studies in medical journals are demonstrating impressive results when acupuncture is combined with ART. A landmark study published in April 2002 in the Fertility and Sterility journal concluded that women who received acupuncture after IVF embryo transfer had a 42.5% success rate, compared with a 26.3% success rate of those women who did not receive acupuncture. TCM is not only useful in treating female infertility, but male infertility as well. Many problems concerning sperm motility, mobility, or morphology can be helped by acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
